My background
I come from a family of people who love their practical, creative hobbies.
My Mum was into yarn crafts, embroidery, and cooking, my Dad did gardening and woodwork. My Mum’s mum was a tailoress, and she taught me to sew. Sewing was quick, and easy to correct mistakes, and it was the hobby I loved the most, although I then tried every traditional craft I could find to make sure that sewing was The One. (Have you tried tatting and bead weaving? Very fun!).
I loved dressmaking, and ended up studying Fashion Design at university (after a year of teacher training), then went to work for a fabric department store. I stayed there in different roles until 2006, when I left to have my son.
How Hazel A Patterns came into being
In 2019, my best friend Vicky decided to take the plunge and start her own business.
We had worked together for the fabric company for years, so naturally it was fabrics that she turned to. Vicky’s great gift is to have an eye for design combinations, (in fact, I never shop for fabric without her), so she decided to open an online store that offered subscription boxes.
So where did I come into this plan?
Vicky wanted to offer more than just some lovely fabrics in her boxes, and had thought of offering a project card as an extra, and I volunteered to create one (not even thinking about how to publish it!). The patterns started off small, but as I expanded my desktop skills, they gradually started to have all of the elements you would expect from a pattern: pattern pieces, cutting layouts, more photos, and finally, a full video tutorial to sew along with. I publish a new pattern every to months, and you can still subscribe to Vicky’s Fabulous Fabric Club if you want more than just the pattern.
